Frozen Bubbles
Abraham Lake is stunning in every season, but it truly dazzles in the winter when its blue waters trap thousands of white bubbles below the surface. During my second trip to capture images of the frozen methane bubbles, I geared up with the warmest winter wear and ice cleats, braving the cold (-6C or 20F) but thankfully with the wind dying down, making it bearable.
The Abraham Lake bubbles are an intriguing winter wonder, showcasing icy patterns and shapes frozen in form. Surrounding these beautiful bubbles are deep cracks, inverted walls of ice, and sometimes milky ribbons of snow in the glistening, frozen water. As Abraham Lake continues to freeze, stacks and layers of bubbles emerge in the thickening ice, resembling a giant lava lamp with icy blobs frozen in time. The lake's unique clarity of ice and high concentration of bubbles make it a special place to witness this phenomenon. Despite the strong wind gusts that can blow off snow, the beauty of the frozen methane bubbles at Abraham Lake remains a captivating sight.
