Athabasca Falls
Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, approximately 30 kilometres south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, Canada, and just west of the Icefields Parkway. It is classified as a Class 5 waterfall, with a total drop height of 79 ft and a width of 151 ft. Known for its powerful and picturesque nature, Athabasca Falls is not primarily recognized for its height but for its force, attributed to the significant volume of water cascading into the gorge. This force can be substantial even on cold fall mornings when river levels are at their lowest. The river flows over a layer of hard quartzite and through the softer limestone below, creating a short gorge and several potholes. Visitors can safely view and photograph the falls from various viewing platforms and walking trails in the vicinity. Whitewater rafting often commences below the falls, offering an exhilarating journey downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper.
